I was wondering what shirts everyone likes to wear with their skinny jeans? I've been having some trouble finding something that works well. Most men's shirts are, like their pants, just too baggy. Wearing them with tight fitting jeans makes the shirt almost dress-like.
I suppose I could go with an athletic compression shirt (and, to be honest, I do wear them under another shirt), but most men's shirts are too short and don't cover the bulge (plus, I still need to lose an inch or two in flab).
Lately I've started thinking about fitted polo/golf shirts. Has anyone tried this? Any other ideas?

I think you found the answer - polo shirts can be worn tucked in or free hanging which will cover the waist and perhaps be low enough to partially cover the bulge - Which when wearing jeans should never a problem. The bulge in jean wearing is a mark of masculinity even if the jeans are fitted for the fair side of the aisle ! Only cavet is the jeans that have no ease of use (tight camel toe) revealing the lack of comfortable space. Also consider athletic shirts be they short sleeved cap sleeved or sleeveless and collar not required - careful though with a tight compression fit at the waist showing a belly bulge (avoid solid colors in this area). Review the wardrobe in front of a mirror - is this you or not and as your avatar hints:
" Still a little nervous wearing skin tight clothes "
If it doesn't seem right then maybe it is not you - you have to figure that out yourself with the family friends and associates you live with.

So I guess a trip to Kohl's is in order. :-) I'll have to see what they have for shirts as, when I did some web searching for fitted shirts, they came up a lot.
You know, I would wear leggings and athletic shirts without fear if it weren't for two things:
(1) For most of my 20s and 30s, I used to be 40 lbs heavier than I am now. I've made a lot of progress, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm not yet "worthy" of wearing the clothing that feels best to me.
(2) I really am a modest person. I work best "behind the scenes" keeping up the infrastructure, so being noticed makes me uncomfortable (Yes, I know, I teach, but that's more for conveying information than being "on stage.") Form fitting clothes on guys is still unusual and gets noticed. Add to that the male "package" and I'm paying more attention to other people's reactions than just relaxing and enjoying my preferred clothing.
I guess I want it both ways and, clearly, one cannot both be in leggings and spandex shirts and also not show off the feared male curvature that we're not supposed to have.
On the plus side, I'm slowly getting better about no longer caring as much about other people's judgements, but it's taking longer than typical for me. Also on the plus side is a Significant Other that kicks me out the door in skinny jeans and athletic shirts. ;-)
But, as I said, I'm wide open to suggestions that will help me make the transition.

Asos, Aeropostale, Hot Topic, Top Man, H & M (and I'm pretty sure more stores) has men shirts in smaller sizes. You can even get them in extra small.

Yes try to buy local so you can size up the fit in person before you buy - that failing check out Ebay clothing made in China (Asia)- almost guaranteed to be smaller than the USA sizing. I have problems the other direction - finding a fitting piece of clothing in LARGER sizes; have to look for Asian sizing 3X or even 4X. For you the Asian size Large is like a USA Medium. Check the sellers Feedback for quality of material & sewing. HINT: Always request the sizing - no make that DEMANDING !
